It’s always better to ask, “are you OK?” Asking provides an opportunity for your colleague to open up and receive support, potentially preventing small problems from becoming bigger ones. Here are the signals to watch for –



Verbal Expression

  • Irritability.

  • Unusual scepticism.

  • More critical of themselves or others.

  • Expressing they can’t cope.


Visual Display

  • Mood, energy or motivation changes.

  • Concentration and memory issues.

  • Tense, inability to relax.

  • Persistent or excessive worry.


Behaviour Change

  • Withdrawal and avoidance.

  • Neglect of responsibilities/carelessness.

  • Anxiety and occasional panic.

  • More or less interested in their appearance.


Outside Work

  • Inability to switch off.

  • Changes to eating habits and sleep patterns.

  • Increased substance use or escapism.
