Be fully present in the moment
Minimise distractions and focus your attention entirely on the person speaking. This demonstrates you value what they are saying.
Be curious but not intrusive
Approach the conversation with genuine curiosity to understand their experience without judgment. Ask open-ended questions to encourage them to elaborate.
Show empathy
Even if you don’t fully grasp their situation or agree with their interpretation, demonstrate empathy. Use empathetic phrases such as, “It sounds like you’re going through a challenging time”.
Trust is key
Create an environment where they feel safe to be vulnerable, trusting that their vulnerability won’t be used against them. Reassure them around appropriate confidentiality.
You need to be strong
Demonstrate your own inner-strength by remaining calm and grounded if the conversation becomes emotional. This can help the other person feel safer.
Be consistent
In most cases, these should not be one-off conversations. Offer to check-in with them soon, and show you’re always available if they need to talk to you.
